Wood Modular Kitchen Side Effects: What Are They?

These are as follows:

Possibility of moisture-related damage

Moisture damage is one of the main disadvantages of wooden modular kitchens. Wood is sensitive to moisture. That should be one of the most significant disadvantages of a wooden cabinet. The kitchen is perhaps one of the most humid areas in your home, after the bathroom.

The moisture can make the wood swell, warp, or even rot over time. This can lead to a shorter lifespan of your cabinet.

Wooden cabinets with drawers close to sinks and dishwashers can be more prone to moisture-related damage. It can create issues even when it is treated or laminated. The damage can gradually lead to a gradual decline in the functionality of the cabinet.

Higher maintenance issues in wood modular kitchens

Maintenance issues in wood modular kitchens are quite prevalent. Wooden modular kitchen cabinets need a high level of maintenance. Some of the routine tasks in this context include polishing, sealing, or varnishing to prevent wear and tear.  The wood can lose its shine over time and will need repolishing and treating with specialized chemicals.

Wood may also be susceptible to dents and cracks. These damages can be quite costly to repair. This can lead to an additional maintenance-related cost. In fact, you would find that wooden cabinets result in a higher cost for proper upkeep.

Possibility of pest infestation

Wood modular kitchen side effects include the possibility of pest infestation. Wood is a natural material and is susceptible to pests. It can invite several pests like termites, wood borers, and ants. If you are into regular maintenance and upkeep, the infestation can go beyond control. It may be important to go with powerful anti-termite solutions.

Of course, you can find termite-resistant wood options. But, that would be a very costly option to choose. Even then, you may need periodic pest control initiatives. Even when you opt for a more costly material and effective pest control options, it is still possible that the wood will still be facing severe issues.

Limited durability

When you compare wood to other materials, you will find that wood offers considerably less durability. Of course, using solid hardwood can provide you with a better lifespan. But, modular kitchen cabinets normally use engineered wood, plywood, or MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard). These are known to offer a lower lifespan.

Modular kitchen cabinets are exposed to cooking heat, sunlight, and moisture. This can considerably hasten the aging process of the wood used in the modular kitchen cabinets. This is why you will need to replace or refurbish your modular kitchen cabinets over a shorter span of time.

Color fades or discoloration

Wood is susceptible to fading over time. This is more common in the areas that are exposed to sunlight. The wood looks great because of the natural tones and grains in it. Fading can cause the wood to lose these traits. The material would lose color over time.

The UV rays from the sun can damage a wood faster if it is exposed to sunlight for prolonged periods of time. These rays can make the wood to get darkened. Of course, you can consider applying a UV-resistant coat, but that would add to the cost of maintenance and upkeep.

Higher environmental impact

Sustainability is faster becoming a core factor in our choice of cabinets and even in our day-to-day lives. Wood can cause deforestation and unsustainable logging practices. This can subsequently cause a negative impact on the environment.

If you are a homeowner looking for eco-friendly solutions, it is advisable to choose other alternatives than wood. Wood may be renewable, but may not be the best when it comes to the best sustainability.
