Aluminium Sliding Doors: Complete Buying & Installation Guide

If you are a homeowner looking to renovate your home, you might have noticed that aluminium sliding doors have become quite popular these days. They are the most preferred options for some obvious reasons. They are sleek, highly functional, and solve the problem of a lack of space.

Traditional swing doors take up a lot of space and tend to bang into walls. In contrast, aluminium sliding doors provide the best space-saving door solutions.

This guide is to help you make a confident choice in buying and installing the sliding doors.

The complete buying guide for aluminium sliding doors

Well, with multiple options available for the versatile space-saving door designs, choosing the right one that suits your needs may not be that easy. The buying guide below should help you make the right choice.

Specifications and sizing

The aluminium sliding doors come in a few standard specifications –

• 2-panel: 5ft wide × 6.67ft high or 6ft wide × 6.67ft high
• 3-panel: Up to 9ft wide × 8ft high
• 4-panel: Up to 12ft wide × 8ft high

It may be noticed that the standard sizes will not always fit. You may need to choose a custom size, which may cost more.

As for the glass, you can choose from among multiple options –

• 4mm standard glass: This should be best for a budget option and adequate for most homes
• 6mm toughened glass: 5× stronger. It shatters into blunt pieces
• Double-glazed (4mm + 4mm): It offers better insulation. It can reduce noise by 25-35%.
• Laminated glass: It doesn’t shatter even if broken. This provides an excellent security
• Frosted glass: Lets light in, blocks views, perfect for privacy

You can pick the right type of glass based on your specific needs. We at Elite Aluminium offer you customised solutions based on your specific needs.

Profiles and finishes

As for the finish, there are two commonly preferred options used in India.

Anodized finish creates a protective layer. Silver or bronze tones. Lower cost. Standard choice.

Powder-coated finish offers a paint-like appearance. Wide color options can be availed based on your liking. Some options available include white, black, grey, bronze, and wood grain. You will also get better corrosion resistance. However, these finishes come with a slightly higher cost. However, the practically no need for maintenance makes the initial cost offset.

Both are excellent for Indian conditions. You can choose powder-coated for specific colors.

Sliding door installation tips India

If you want to have a proper installation of your aluminium sliding doors, it is advisable to follow a few key tips for installation.

• Hire a professional – We understand that a DIY installation might seem tempting. But sliding door installation requires precision. Misaligned doors become sticky and hard to lock. Bad sealing leads to water leaks during monsoons. Always go with a certified and reputable installer.
• Don’t rush alignment – Proper alignment of the doors takes time. Rushing here causes expensive problems later.
• Avoid installations during heavy rains – Silicone sealant needs 24-48 hours to cure. The rainy season may interfere with the proper sealing due to moisture.
• Get written warranty – Professional installers should provide a 2-5 year warranty. However, make sure that you get it in writing.

Monthly maintenance schedule

• Clean tracks weekly with a brush or vacuum, wipe with a damp cloth
• Wipe glass with a microfiber cloth and mild cleaner
• Check handles and locks for smooth operation

Quarterly maintenance schedule

• Lubricate rollers and tracks with silicone-based spray (avoid WD-40)
• Check weather strips for cracks or peeling
• Inspect the sill for proper water drainage

Annual maintenance schedule

• Deep clean the sill channel thoroughly—silt accumulates here
• Check glass seals for cracks in silicone sealant
• Verify door alignment by gently pushing on the frame
• Test locks thoroughly at all engagement points
